Jeong Hur

THE BLANC is pleased to present Jeong Hur: 42, the Seoul-born, Brooklyn-based artist’s first solo exhibition in New York, curated by Leo Yuan.
Jeong Hur (b. 1991) draws inspiration from the logic of practical construction, balancing an awareness of functional structures with questions of visibility, light, and how we see. Working where these interests meet, he uses pine, hanji, carved wood, pigment, and light to build sculptures that evoke the likes of screens, windows, benches, lights, and frames. By borrowing these familiar structural forms, Hur explores how light and sight navigate space—testing what is revealed, what is held back, and the subtle relationships that emerge in between.
This in-between condition is captured in the exhibition’s title, 42. In Korean, the numbers four (sa) and two (i) sound identical to sa-i (사이), a word that means both the physical gap "between" things and the relationship or bond that connects them. Rather than treating space or intervals as empty voids, Hur conceptualizes them as active, continually generated relationships. As a viewer walks around a work, sightlines shift, openings align or block one another, and what is visible changes depending on where one stands. The sculpture responds to that shifting dynamics by incorporating hinged and movable elements that open and close, thereby continually altering both their form and the space they inhabit.
