Becoming Other

Feb 15 - Mar 13 2025

Yiou Wang

Becoming Other marks the first North American solo exhibition of multimedia artist Yiou Wang. Through immersive installations, animation, motion capture, and digital prints, Wang constructs mythic worlds that blur the boundary between the physical and virtual. Trained as an architect, her practice unfolds across formats—video games, performances, interactive environments—each acting as an entry point into expansive narrative ecosystems.

The exhibition explores the fluid transformation between self and other, mapping identity as something mutable, relational, and deeply entwined with its environment. Rooted in “ancient future myths,” Becoming Other presents evolving fragments from Wang’s ongoing worldbuilding projects. These works branch across the space like living systems, offering a speculative vision of myth, technology, and ecology in continuous flux.

In the front space, a suite of eight digital art prints and six simultaneously played animations from worlds of Soul-Assemblages, Streamborn, and Liquid Paintings fills the room. Yiou merges ethereal movement

with laboriously crafted environments, characters, and textural landscapes. Through intricate computational forms and biomorphic abstractions, their aesthetic oscillates between the haunting and

the ethereal—where fragmented figures, skeletal frameworks, and fluid textures dissolve into immersive, otherworldly compositions.

In the immersive space, morphing creatures await in holograms of Mixanthropy. As viewers move through the immersive worlds of Water and Co-Life/Co-Demise, they encounter fantastical flora and fauna, dreamlike landscapes, biomorphic abstractions, and deconstructions—each contributing to an aesthetic that oscillates between the haunting and the ethereal. Focused on embodiment in recent years, Yiou’s figures add another layer of alterity through the integration of performance capture and voice acting by various collaborators. Vaporous textures, fractal decay, molten minerals, cosmic formations, ephemeral motion, and crystallized forms embody a fluid morphology in a state of constant becoming—challenging us to reflect upon our own biases, fear of the Other, and the entanglement between gaming and ecological thinking.
