La Promesse

La Promesse, the show, is a constellation of large and small prints, some framed, some unframed just pinned on the wall, floating freely, like teared pages from the book flying away up to the walls, or like butterflies who would just pause before flying again. This type of studio-like installation echoes with the intimacy and fragility of the subject : ephemeral beauty of life. From far, you see a life partition or choreography, up close, you get into details or immersed in a face or landscape. A myriad of colors and emotions, of poetic fragments floating into space. Combined, the book itself, the 3 photobooks flattened at different page on the wall, open form free to be leafed through by the viewer or curator.

La Promesse, like a photographic poem, reveals through the years & seasons, fragments of the artist's love & family diary. Faces, places, details echo on each other and draw, between the lines, the film of our memories. Expectations, cycles and splits, joy and cracks - from the desire of child to maternity and motherhood, and then childhood revisited, la promesse celebrates the little vertigos and quiet miracles of an ordinary life, tracing a contemplative memory of time passing by.

Artist

Marilia Destot is a french photographer, living and working in New York.

Her personal work focuses, through portrait, dance and landscapes series, on the writing of time cycling and passing by, and our trace within it. Memory, recorded and revisited, in its most subjective and poetic ways, is at the core of her research. She keeps experimenting the photo-medium into different narrative and visual dimensions: chronophotography, diaries, sequences, correspondence, open forms where the subject can expend through repetitions, variations, lapses. And reveals itself in fragments, echoes, illusions, free to float and resonate with the viewer’s imagination and intimate world.
