Pulsing Sound Series -2 Mensajes del Agua

Program

Mensajes del Agua presents a lyrical and wide-ranging program for cello and piano that brings together contemporary expression and foundational masterworks. The evening begins with three works by Andrea Casarrubios titled Silbo, Mensajes del Agua, and Sonia, each exploring memory, landscape, and emotional resonance through fluid, water-inspired musical gestures. The program then moves into the dramatic breadth of Johannes Brahms’s Sonata in F Major, Op. 99, a cornerstone of the cello repertoire known for its bold contrasts and sweeping romantic lines. After intermission, the duo performs Chen Yi’s Romance of Hsiao and Ch’in, a poetic work shaped by the timbres and imagery of traditional Chinese instruments, followed by Nadia Boulanger’s Trois Pièces, a set of three concise and intimate movements that reveal her refined sense of lyricism and clarity. Together, these pieces form a compelling journey across eras and musical languages, highlighting the full expressive range of the cello and piano partnership.

Musicians

Lydia Rhea x Amber Scherer

Having met while they were both students at The Juilliard School, cellist Lydia Rhea and pianist Amber Scherer soon bonded over programming that centers underrepresented composers, blurs the lines between classical and jazz genres, and prioritizes storytelling in accessible ways.
