THE BLANC Studio Artist Jeana Zhenyu Zhang presents her solo exhibition, Arising and Passing, at VillageOneArt in New York this fall. On view through October 24, 2026, the exhibition brings together a recent body of paintings that reflects Zhang’s ongoing exploration of material, movement, and the evolving relationship between Eastern and Western painting traditions.

Working across acrylic, ink, wood, canvas, and retted flax, Zhang creates layered compositions that move fluidly between abstraction and representation. Her practice draws from an artistic education spanning China and the United States, bringing the visual language and material sensibilities of Chinese ink painting into dialogue with contemporary approaches to painting.

For Zhang, returning to ink was also a return to the foundations of her early artistic training. Rather than treating tradition as a fixed language, however, she uses it as a point of departure. In recent works, heated metallic compounds are incorporated into acrylic paint and combined with carefully developed passages of ink and color. By tilting and maneuvering the surface while materials remain wet, Zhang allows gravity, movement, and controlled chance to participate in the formation of each composition.

Through this process, Zhang describes her practice as an effort to “create a new logic of painting”—one in which different artistic traditions, materials, and methods do not simply coexist, but actively transform one another. The resulting works feel simultaneously spontaneous and deliberate, carrying traces of classical training while opening toward a distinctly contemporary and hybrid visual language.

Zhang is currently part of THE BLANC Studio Artist community, where she continues to develop her painting practice. Her presentation at VillageOneArt reflects the kind of sustained artistic development that THE BLANC’s studio program seeks to support providing artists with space for experimentation, research, and the continued evolution of their individual practices.

Arising and Passing is on view at VillageOneArt through October 24, 2026.
