We are thrilled to welcome artists-in-residence Afroditi Psarra and Audrey Briot as the second residents in our Artist-in-Residence program.
The duo will occupy one of ten newly renovated sixth-floor studios as they continue developing Listening Space - a collaborative research project and exhibition that transforms invisible electromagnetic signals into tangible textile artifacts.
Using wearable, hand-crafted antennas and software-defined radios, the artists intercept NOAA weather satellite transmissions as they orbit overhead, capturing atmospheric data as raw material for both citizen science and artistic expression. These intercepted data streams are decoded in real time and physically archived through knitted textiles.
Produced on digitally controlled knitting machines, the large-scale works function as data physicalizations, translating atmospheric satellite imagery into readable surface maps where weather systems and environmental events emerge as dense constellations of points knitted into the fabric.
Afroditi Psarra and Audrey Briot have been collaborating on Listening Space since 2019. Their work has been recognized with the Bergstrom Award for Art and Science and exhibited internationally at venues including LABoral, Onassis Stegi, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, ISWC, and ISEA.
Through video performance, electronic prototypes, and intricate knitted tapestries, Listening Space invites viewers to sense the environment beyond human perception and reconsider the invisible infrastructures that shape planetary awareness.
Artists-in-residence are currently selected by THE BLANC's curatorial team. Beginning in Fall 2026, the program will transition to an open-call format.
