Estimated Exhibitng during Asian Week 2024
TheBLANC will be hosting an open-call exhibition during 2024 Asian Week. Submission for this exhibition will last from Dec.15th to Jan.30th.
"Safe Space" in the context of this exhibition is dualfolded. It could be a place of belonging and acceptance, where individual identities can be freely expressed and nurtured in a reparative air. While there also exists the potential for these spaces to foster a kind of uniformity in thought, known as groupthink, which can lead to an uncritical acceptance of collective beliefs, insiders could also consider it as safe for its solidification on individuals' stand. Thus, a 'Safe Space' can be a complex arena, oscillating between irrational consensus and a genuine understanding of truth.
This duality leads us to a critical point of reflection - the need to examine the very genesis of our beliefs. Do we believe it because everyone around us does, or have we critically engaged, dissected, and arrived at our convictions? And most importantly, can shared beliefs stand the test of diverse thought?
This exhibition aims to be a platform for introspection, dialogue, and a deeper understanding of both the power and pitfalls of safe spaces, whether through physical manifestations like family or immigrant community, or abstract notions like language, religion, and beliefs. We invite all to contribute works that challenge, interrogate, and expand our understanding of 'safe space'.
A key aspect of this exhibition is its deliberate effort to transcend the limitations of any specific cultural stereotype. It aims to establish an independent space for critical thought and reflective dialogues. We eschew the oversimplified and often generalized notions of identity that have historically dominated the mainstream art scene, opting instead to illuminate the profound and often understated moments of existence that connect us all.
To be considered, artists must include a detailed description of each work, including images or videos, and accompanying text. Additionally, artists should include their portfolio or website link, and an artist's statement that describes their creative process and vision.
Artists are encouraged to submit works in any medium, while submitted works should be available to be exhibited and not committed to other engagements for the entire duration of the exhibition.
Submitted artworks will be juried by jury members, and selected artists will be notified via email.
