THE BLANC is pleased to announce and warmly congratulate our studio artist, Jeana Zhenyu Zhang, on her recent gallery representation by VillageOneArt.
Based in New York, Zhang’s practice investigates the dialectical relationship between ink and acrylic as vehicles for cultural inquiry, diasporic memory, and philosophical reflection on chance and selfhood. Her work reflects a rigorous training across both Eastern and Western traditions—she completed her foundational studies at Alfred University, received her BFA from California College of the Arts, and earned her MFA from Parsons School of Design. These formative experiences are structurally embedded within the logic of her artistic language.

At the core of Zhang’s practice is a sustained engagement with two materially distinct substances: ink and acrylic. Ink, rooted in the tradition of Chinese calligraphy, operates as a permeable and spiritual medium—what the artist describes as her “creative genetics,” shaped by early calligraphic training and internalized as a way of being. In contrast, acrylic functions as a contemporary, adaptable medium with global associations. Rather than existing in opposition, these materials activate one another, forming a dynamic and generative dialogue.
Through this interplay, Zhang constructs a nuanced framework that moves beyond a fixed East–West binary. Ink serves as a cultural anchor within postcolonial discourse, while acrylic reflects the adaptive conditions of transnational life. Together, they produce a self-determined visual language that negotiates identity, displacement, and cultural continuity.
This material dialectic extends into Zhang’s working process. Through physical interventions—such as reorienting the canvas during painting—she incorporates gravity and pigment flow into what she describes as an “aesthetic of controlled contingency.” The resulting works maintain a delicate balance between chance and agency, fate and self-formation. Her evolving series unfolds as stratified visual fields, where surfaces of apparent spontaneity quietly register time, memory, and lived experience.
As part of THE BLANC’s studio program, Zhang continues to develop her practice within a broader community dedicated to interdisciplinary exploration and contemporary artistic inquiry. We are delighted to see her work recognized at this important moment and look forward to her continued growth.
Congratulations to Jeana Zhenyu Zhang on this exciting milestone!
